Elevation is pleased to welcome Murray Johnson, Senior Bridge Engineer, who brings 44 years of experience in designing, constructing, and innovating transportation infrastructure. A registered P.Eng. in B.C. and Alberta, he holds a BASc in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta.
Murray has led groundbreaking projects, including the seamless overnight move of the Capilano River Bridge into a detour alignment to facilitate replacement, the complex construction engineering of Falls Creek Bridge (CəX̣ʷ Cixʷ Bridge), and extensive work on B.C. iconic timber Howe truss bridges.
Outside of Canada, Murray spearheaded the construction engineering for Madison, Indiana and Milton, Kentucky ‘s Milton-Madison Bridge’s innovative construction scheme, which replaced the bridge on the same alignment while keeping traffic flowing. The culmination of this scheme involved a lateral slide that moved a half mile-long, 30-million-pound steel truss bridge 55 feet from temporary piers onto permanent, refurbished piers, setting a world record for the longest bridge to be slid laterally into place.
Another memorable achievement is his contribution to the construction engineering of Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Bridge. Conceived by famed British female architect, Dame Zaha Hadid, the 842-metre-long, 64-metre-high bridge is said to be one of the most complex bridges ever built.
“I’m excited to return to a small, specialized firm,” Murray says. “Elevation allows me to exceed client expectations, build strong relationships, and help engineer creative, practical solutions for transportation infrastructure in the province I love.”
Dedicated to mentorship, Murray actively shares insights with emerging engineers. Outside of work, he enjoys time with his grandchildren, tending his vegetable garden and orchard, and sharing his harvest.
We look forward to the expertise and value he’ll bring to our clients and team.
